Our Mission
The Virginia Health Care Foundation (VHCF) is a public-private partnership dedicated to addressing the critical issue of access to primary healthcare for uninsured and underserved Virginians. Since 1992, we have been working to ensure that every Virginian has the opportunity to achieve better health and well-being.
Who We Serve
Our focus lies on supporting initiatives that:
- Increase access to healthcare: We support programs that provide medical, dental, and mental healthcare services to the uninsured and under-insured.
- Empower individuals: We invest in workforce development and training programs to help people obtain the skills and credentials necessary for gainful employment.
- Promote health equity: We address geographic disparities in access to care and work to ensure that all Virginians, regardless of their socioeconomic background or location, have the opportunity to achieve good health outcomes.

Access to Care
- Providing financial assistance for prescription medications
- Supporting the creation and expansion of safety net programs
- Promoting access to mental health and behavioral healthcare
- Ensuring access to dental care for underserved communities
Workforce Development
- Investing in scholarships and training programs for healthcare professionals
- Developing and disseminating data and resources to address health disparities
Community Outreach
- Providing application assistance for Medicaid and other health insurance programs
- Conducting outreach and enrollment events
- Raising awareness about health issues and encouraging people to get the care they need
Data & Research
- Publishing detailed reports and data analyses on Virginia's uninsured and access to healthcare
- Tracking and disseminating data on the effectiveness of interventions and programs
Our Impact
Since our inception, VHCF has:
- Made over 3.9 million patient visits possible
- Generated over $9 billion in free medications for those in need
- Enrolled over 146,000 Virginians in state-sponsored health insurance
- Provided over $16 million in grants to support healthcare programs in the Commonwealth.
