Welcome to the Virginia University of Integrative Medicine (VUIM), a leading institution in the field of Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine. Our university is dedicated to providing the highest quality education to our students, fostering their growth as practitioners, and contributing to the development of the Acupuncture field.
Mission Statement
Our mission is to educate and empower practitioners who will change the world by integrating ancient knowledge with modern biomedical science, and providing our students with a lifelong passion and purpose in a rewarding career path.
Institutional History
VUIM was founded in 1998 as the first institution in Virginia to offer degree programs in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Over the years, we have grown to become a nationally recognized leader in the field, with a reputation for excellence in education and patient care.
Accreditation
VUIM is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine (ACAHM), the recognized accrediting agency for the approval of programs preparing acupuncture and Oriental medicine practitioners.

Our Team
VUIM is led by a team of experienced professionals who are dedicated to the success of our students and the growth of the Acupuncture field. Our team includes:
- Executive Leadership: Our executive leadership team is responsible for the overall direction and management of the university.
- Advisory Board: Our advisory board is composed of leaders in the field of Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine who provide guidance and support to the university.
- Board of Trustees: Our board of trustees is responsible for the financial oversight and governance of the university.
- Faculty: Our world-class faculty teach our degree programs and blend ancient knowledge with modern biomedical science.
- Staff: Our staff supports the day-to-day operations of the university and provides assistance to our students.
Academics
Our faculty strive to motivate and inspire our students by setting high standards and meeting those standards through innovative pedagogical methodologies while keeping things fun and interesting. Our degree programs include:
- Master of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine (MAcHM) Program
- Master of Acupuncture (MAc) Program
- Doctor of Acupuncture (DAc.) and Doctor of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine (DAcHM) Programs
- Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (DAOM) Program
- Certificate in Chinese Herbal Medicine (CCHM) Program
Our research and publications contribute to the advancement of the Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine field. Our research is led by Lixing Lao, Ph. D, an internationally recognized expert in the field.

Our clinics are open and offer visits by appointment only. We are proud to provide high-quality patient care and offer a variety of services to our community.
