Sayat Nova Dance

The Sayat Nova Dance Company of Boston (SNDC) is a non-profit dance ensemble dedicated to preserving and promoting the Armenian culture through the art of dance. Founded in January 1986 under the direction of Apo Ashjian, the Company aims to foster an atmosphere of friendship among individuals sharing the pride and indomitable spirit of the Armenian people, as well as further educate and elevate multicultural awareness within all ethnic communities worldwide.

Our mission is to preserve and promote the Armenian culture through the art of dance. This is achieved by bringing young, talented individuals together from all ages and backgrounds to join in bringing Armenian folk dance to life. Each dance symbolizes the livelihood, the aspirations, the legends, the celebration of life, and the appreciation of beauty of the Armenian people.

Our History

The Sayat Nova Dance Company takes its name from the famous 18th-century troubadour, Sayat Nova, whose beautiful music and poetry capture the essence of the Armenian soul and spirit. Since its inception, the Company has been dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich culture of Armenia through dance.

Over the years, SNDC has performed extensively throughout the United States and Canada, as well as in Armenia. The ensemble has presented over twenty performances throughout the country to rave reviews, including in the capital city of Yerevan and in Stepanakert, the capital city of Artsakh. The Company's most recent trip in July 2016 included participation in the "Im Hayastan" (My Armenia) festival in Yerevan. The two-week visit culminated in a private performance for the Armenian Military at the Baronian Theater in Yerevan and a sold-out performance at Yerevan's famous Opera House, the most prestigious theater in Armenia.

Artistic Leadership

Our artistic leadership team consists of dedicated individuals who are passionate about preserving and promoting the Armenian culture through dance. Apo Ashjian, the founder and director of SNDC, has been active in Armenian dance for over four decades. Shaghig Palanjian and Hagop Ashijan serve as assistant directors, bringing their own unique experiences and talents to the ensemble.

Services Offered

Sayat Nova Dance Company offers a variety of services to suit any need. We have performed as headliners in large venues, performed in outdoor theaters, and participated in international festivals. We are also open to collaborations with other dance companies and styles of dance. Whether you're looking for a spectacular performance or an educational workshop, SNDC is here to share the beauty and richness of Armenian culture with you.
