Spivey Karate & Tai Chi: A Legacy of Martial Arts Excellence

Spivey Karate & Tai Chi has been dedicated to the cultivation of martial arts excellence since its establishment in 1978. Founded by Hall of Fame Soke Grand Master William F. Spivey Sr., Spivey Karate has become a cornerstone of the Dade City community and the wider martial arts world. With a focus on the perfection of character, Spivey Karate's mission is to inspire physical, mental, and social transformation in each of its students.

The Spivey Karate Journey

The Spivey Karate Journey began for our founder, Grand Master William F. Spivey Sr., when he was just 12 years old. His fascination with the martial arts began as he poured over the pages of Black Belt magazine and mimicked the moves he saw there. This passion eventually led him to train under the guidance of his mentor and Sensei, Frederick "Fred" Wilford Kelley Jr., who would become a significant influence in Grand Master Spivey's life.

Grand Master Spivey's journey has been marked by numerous awards for his dedication and contributions to the martial arts, including the Self Defense Instructor of the Year, Soke (founder of a martial arts style) of the Year, Platinum Lifetime Achievement Award, and induction into the Society of Black Belts of America. Despite his many accolades, Grand Master Spivey remains passionate about teaching karate to students of all ages and abilities, treating each student as an extension of the Spivey Karate family.

Quality & Creed

The pursuit of quality and the cultivation of character are central to the Spivey Karate philosophy. The school's creed reflects this commitment: "Martial Arts is not about victory or defeat. It is about the perfection of the character." This emphasis on character development is exemplified in the Black Belt Club of America, a Boy Scout-like program that encourages participants to work towards the American Eagle Award. Members of the Black Belt Club strive for academic excellence, martial arts improvement, and positive contributions to their communities through subjects such as family and school helping hands, parent appreciation, and essays on courtesy, attitude, and determination.

Tai Chi: Grace, Dignity, and Harmony

At Spivey Karate, the pursuit of martial arts excellence extends beyond karate. Tai Chi is an integral part of the school's offerings, taught by Grand Master Spivey's wife, Linda, a highly respected Tai Chi instructor with 22 years of instruction. Ms. Linda's grace, dignity, and honesty have made her a beloved figure among her students, and she has been honored as the Tai Chi Instructor of the Year by the World Martial Arts League. Under her guidance, students learn to harmonize their breath and movement, cultivating a sense of inner peace and balance.

A Warm Welcome to All

One of the defining features of Spivey Karate is the community of students that has formed around the school's mission of martial arts excellence. Each student is considered an extension of the Spivey Karate family, and the school is proud of the roots it has established in Dade City and the surrounding areas. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced martial artist, Spivey Karate offers a warm welcome to all who seek to embark on the martial arts journey.
