Cabot Vineyards is a thriving wine business nestled in the heart of the stunning and rugged Mountains of Humboldt County. Our primary goal is to cultivate and produce wines that truly embody the unique characteristics of each vineyard site. We strive for wines that are fresh, with a purity of fruit and true varietal character. Our commitment to sustainability and organic farming ensures that our wines are not only delicious but also responsibly produced.

Our Founder: John Cabot

John Cabot's journey in the wine industry began when he was a 25-year-old organic produce farmer. His passion for wine grew as he started to recognize the exceptional wine-producing climate of Humboldt County. In 1998, he planted his first 7-acre vineyards of own-rooted Syrah, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. After receiving critical acclaim for our initial vintages, John's dream of owning a vineyard and winery became a reality.

Our Estate Vineyard

Our estate vineyard is located near the town of Orleans, in the Klamath River valley, Humboldt County. The cooling influence of the ocean and the warmth of being in a coastal inland valley allow us to produce wines that are balanced, complex, and bursting with ripe fruit flavors. Our vineyard is situated on a northwest slope known for more than 100 feet of shale and schist rock, which provides excellent drainage and a unique minerality to our wines. After two years of land preparation and design, we planted 2.7 acres of own-rooted Syrah vines, with small amounts of Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Viognier in the rockiest section.

Sustainable Practices

At Cabot Vineyards, we are committed to sustainable and organic farming practices. We employ a no-till cultivation program and avoid the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. This approach not only benefits the environment but also results in healthier vines and more flavorful wines. Our wine production process prioritizes natural yeasts for fermentation and aging in mostly neutral French oak, allowing the varietal and vineyard characteristics to shine through.

Our Wines

Our wines are a true expression of their terroir, showcasing the unique characteristics of our vineyard sites. We aim to pick our fruit at the perfect moment, balancing ripe fruit characters with good natural acidity and varietal character. Each of our three small vineyards has a distinctive and consistent personality that is reflected in the wines every year. Our portfolio includes wines from our estate vineyard, as well as our Marier vineyard, located on the south side of the same mountain.
