Urban Forest Hardwoods is a business that specializes in sourcing locally grown hardwoods and transforming them into custom furniture and other wooden pieces. Our mission is to provide a sustainable, environmentally-friendly source of high-quality hardwood with the lowest carbon footprint possible. We believe that every tree has a story, and we strive to preserve the natural beauty and character of each piece of wood we work with.

Our journey began in 2008 when we purchased a Woodmizer and started milling logs reclaimed from Richmond's Urban Forest. For us, working with wood is a primal experience that requires steady nerves, experienced judgment, and a deep connection with the divine. We carefully search for logs and perfect our skills as sawyers, all while gaining knowledge of the wood and designing and building furniture.

Our founder, Joe Konopka, has always sought refuge amongst the trees. As a child, he was drawn to the woods seeking a sense of connection with the natural world. He began his career as a residential carpenter and later a contractor, but his love for trees and woodworking led him to start Urban Forest Hardwoods. For Joe, working with wood is a way of giving back to the trees that have given him so much.

We specialize in live-edge slabs, quartersawn hardwoods, and custom designs, ensuring that each piece of wood is unique and full of character.
