Uniting the legal community in the service of the people

At the National Lawyers Guild, we are dedicated to promoting and protecting human rights and the rights of ecosystems over property interests. Our mission is to unite lawyers, law students, legal workers, and jailhouse lawyers to function as an effective force in the service of the people.

Established in 1937, we have been working tirelessly to use law for the people. We believe that law should be used as a tool to uplift and empower individuals and communities, rather than to further enrich the wealthy and powerful. Our commitment to social justice and equality drives everything we do.

Our Work

We have a variety of programs and initiatives aimed at promoting and protecting human rights and the rights of ecosystems. These include:

  • Legal Observer Program: This program provides trained observers to monitor police conduct during protests and other political activities. Our observers help ensure that the rights of demonstrators are respected and that they are not subject to excessive force or harassment.
  • Coalitions & Endorsements: We work with a wide range of organizations and coalitions to advance our shared goals of social justice and equality. By working together, we can amplify our voices and create meaningful change.
  • Defense of BLM Protesters: We are committed to providing legal support to Black Lives Matter protesters and activists. We believe that everyone has the right to express their opinions and advocate for change without fear of persecution.
  • Civil Rights Litigation: We engage in litigation aimed at challenging systemic injustices and promoting civil rights. Our lawyers work tirelessly to ensure that the law is used to protect and empower individuals and communities.

Our People

Our organization is made up of dedicated individuals who are passionate about social justice and equality. Our board of directors and staff are committed to using their skills and expertise to advance our mission. We also have a network of volunteers and supporters who help us achieve our goals.

Our History

The National Lawyers Guild was founded in 1937 as a response to the growing threat of fascism in Europe and the United States. Since then, we have been working to promote and protect human rights and the rights of ecosystems. Over the years, we have been involved in a wide range of activities, from providing legal support to activists and protesters to challenging systemic injustices through litigation.

Our Values

At the National Lawyers Guild, we are guided by a set of core values that reflect our commitment to social justice and equality. These values include:

  • Respect for Human Rights: We believe that all individuals have inherent dignity and should be treated with respect and fairness.
  • Commitment to Social Justice: We are dedicated to promoting and protecting the rights of individuals and communities, particularly those who are most vulnerable.
  • Environmental Responsibility: We recognize the importance of protecting the natural world and promoting sustainable practices.
  • Transparency and Accountability: We believe in being transparent in our actions and accountable for our decisions.

If you share our commitment to social justice and equality, we invite you to join us. Whether you are a lawyer, law student, legal worker, or jailhouse lawyer, there are many ways you can get involved and make a difference. Together, we can create a more just and equitable society for all.
