Welcome to Northeast Power, a not-for-profit transmission electric utility dedicated to providing reliable and affordable electricity to the communities we serve. We are deeply rooted in the cooperative spirit, working alongside eight member-distribution cooperatives across northeast Missouri and southeast Iowa. Our three-tiered cooperative system ensures local control and member-ownership at every level.

Our Role in the Cooperative System

Electricity distribution operates on a unique three-tier system, a cornerstone of the cooperative difference. Each tier plays a distinct role in bringing power to your homes and businesses:

1. Member-Distribution Cooperatives: These local cooperatives are the front line, working directly with their member-owners - businesses, farms, and households - to provide reliable electricity service. They understand the unique needs of their communities and strive to be trusted partners in their development.

2. Northeast Power: As a transmission electric utility, we are the vital bridge between generation and distribution. We own and operate the high-voltage transmission lines that carry bulk electricity from generating plants to our member-distribution cooperatives. Our expertise lies in ensuring a reliable and efficient flow of power across vast distances.

3. Generation Cooperatives: These cooperatives work behind the scenes, producing the electricity that fuels our system. Through ownership stakes in large generation facilities, they strive to provide cost-effective and environmentally responsible energy.

Our History

Northeast Power was established on February 2, 1948, by three forward-thinking rural electric cooperatives dedicated to bringing modern electricity to the underserved regions of northeast Missouri. Over the decades, we have grown and evolved to meet the ever-changing energy demands of our communities.

In 1961, Northeast Power joined forces with five other generation and transmission electric cooperatives in Missouri to form Associated Electric Cooperative Inc. This merger created a powerhouse among electric cooperatives, enabling us to collectively leverage resources, optimize generation capacity, and deliver electricity at competitive rates to our members.

Today, Northeast Power stands as a testament to the enduring power of cooperative principles. We prioritize collaboration, innovation, and a deep commitment to our members and communities.
