Mendez Rugs is a family-owned and operated business dedicated to handcrafting exquisite, traditional Zapotec rugs. Born from a rich heritage of textile artistry, our story began in the heart of Oaxaca, Mexico, where weaving is deeply ingrained in the cultural fabric of the region.

Our founder, Mel Mendez, learned the ancient art of rug weaving at the tender age of 12, watching and learning from his father in the quaint village of Teotitlan del Valle. Over the years, Mel refined his skills, mastering the techniques passed down through generations of his family. Today, Mel continues to weave stunning rugs, maintaining the integrity and beauty of this traditional craft.

Mel's wife, Lucy, is an integral part of the business, contributing her expertise and passion to the weaving process. Their two daughters, now learning from their parents, represent the continuation of this cherished family legacy.

The Art of Zapotec Weaving

Our rugs are painstakingly handwoven using 100% natural wool on a two-foot pedal loom, a technique introduced to the Zapotec weavers by the Spanish during the colonial era. Each rug is a testament to the dedication and skill of our artisans, who meticulously select the finest wool and employ intricate patterns passed down through generations.
