About Us

Our Story

At Canal Park Brewing Company, we believe that the best experiences come from sharing good times with great people over delicious food and drinks. As a locally owned family venture, we've had the privilege of owning and operating various businesses in the Twin Ports and surrounding areas for over fifty years. However, our dream of creating a brewery on the shores of Lake Superior was always a long-held ambition.

Our connection to the brewing industry in Duluth goes back to the 1940s and 1950s, when our great uncle, Maxamillian Herrnberger I, was employed by Fitger's Brewery. He would bring handcrafted beers and sodas to family gatherings, sparking our love for the art of brewing. Today, we're proud to continue this tradition, bringing people together over our signature craft beers and delectable dishes.

A Long Road, But Worth Every Penny

After years of dreaming, saving, and planning, we found the perfect location in the heart of our community. We invested considerable time and money into cleaning up years of soil contamination left over from a long history of industrial pollution. Today, our brewery sits on pristine land with breathtaking views of Lake Superior and downtown Duluth.

We're committed to supporting local businesses, the community, and the environment, while providing high-quality food and drink with sustainably sourced ingredients, often organic and local. Our staff creates a warm and inviting atmosphere at the brewery, making you feel like you're somewhere special.

Meet our craft beer champions, a diverse group of diabolical beer makers (and drinkers) who put their heart and soul into creating a place for people to gather, drink beer, and have a really good time. Our brew team is dedicated to producing award-winning beers that showcase the best of what the brewing industry has to offer.

Award Winning Beer

Six of our signature craft beers have won awards. Our Nut Hatchet Brown Ale won Silver at the 2014 World Cup. Our Hank & Dabs Pale Ale won 2nd place for Best in Show and 1st place in the Pale Ale category at the 2019 MN Brewers Cup. Our Click Drag Kolsch, Lone Trekker Belgian Single, and Old Avalanche Barley Wine also took home awards at the 2019 MN Brewers Cup. And most recently, our Lone Trekker Belgian Single took home Gold and our Splendid Wood Scottish Ale took home Bronze at the Best of Craft Beer Awards in 2020.

In 2018, we installed 38 low-profile solar panels on the roof of our brewery. We're always working to find better ways to make our business more sustainable and environmentally friendly. A huge thank you to our staff, Midwest Wind & Solar, and all those involved in the design and implementation.
