Zender Environmental Health & Research Group

Zender Environmental Health & Research Group is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that tackles the unique waste and water quality challenges faced by remote small communities and tribes in Alaska. We believe in the power of local communities to protect their environments and maintain ecological health.

Our Approach

We work in partnership with communities to identify their specific needs and develop tailored solutions. We focus on:

• Community-driven solutions: We empower communities to take ownership of their environmental challenges through collaborative problem-solving and capacity building.
• Technical expertise: Our team of scientists, engineers, and environmental professionals provide technical assistance and training to communities.
• Data-driven solutions: We conduct research and collect data to better understand environmental issues and track the effectiveness of interventions.

What We Do

Our diverse services address a wide range of environmental challenges, including:

Community Assistance

• Rapid response assistance for water contamination emergencies.
• Development of comprehensive waste management and recycling programs.
• Technical training for community members on environmental health and safety topics.

Arctic & Remote Research

• Researching and mitigating the impact of climate change on remote communities.
• Identifying and remediating threats to water quality.
• Developing and evaluating innovative solutions for waste management and resource recovery.

Specialized Programs

• RACEJT Rural Alaska Community Environmental Job Training Program: Equips young adults for sustainable careers in environmental fields.
• Backhaul Alaska: Facilitates the safe and environmentally responsible disposal of hazardous materials.
• Refrigerant Recovery (Freon): Reclaims and recycles unwanted refrigerants to reduce environmental contamination.

Additional Services

• Tribal Exposure to Toxics: Addressing the unique challenges of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in remote communities.
• Program Management & Training: Delivering tailored training programs and workshops on various environmental topics.
