Prairie State Legal Services (PSLS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing equal access to justice for low-income, elderly, and vulnerable individuals across 36 counties in Northern and Central Illinois. Established in 1977, PSLS has a long and proud history of serving those who cannot afford legal representation, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to protect their rights and pursue their best interests. With a network of 11 offices spread across the region, from Bloomington to Woodstock, PSLS is deeply rooted in the communities it serves, building trust and fostering lasting relationships with the people it helps.

Our Mission and Vision

At PSLS, our mission is to empower individuals and families facing poverty by providing high-quality legal services that address their fundamental needs. We strive to create a just and equitable society where everyone has access to the legal tools necessary to secure safe housing, food, income, and personal safety. Our vision is a community where all low-income, elderly, and vulnerable individuals have ready access to the legal services they need to live with dignity and thrive.

Services Offered

PSLS offers a comprehensive range of legal services tailored to the unique needs of our clients.

• Safety: We assist victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking in obtaining protective orders, navigating complicated legal processes, and rebuilding their lives. We also provide advocacy and support to individuals experiencing homelessness and facing legal challenges related to their housing status.

• Housing: PSLS combats housing discrimination and advocates for the right to safe and affordable housing. Our Fair Housing Project investigates and challenges cases of discrimination by housing providers, ensuring that everyone has equal access to decent and affordable housing opportunities. We also provide legal assistance to tenants facing eviction, assisting them in understanding their rights, negotiating with landlords, and seeking legal remedies.

• Financial Stability: PSLS recognizes that financial stability is essential for individual well-being and family security. Our Attorneys dedicate considerable time to helping low-income individuals access public benefits, such as Medicaid and SNAP, ensuring they receive the vital financial support they need. We also assist with issues related to debt collection, debt negotiation, bankruptcy, and predatory lending, empowering individuals to navigate complex financial systems and achieve financial stability.

• Special Projects: PSLS is committed to addressing emerging legal needs and advocating for systemic change. Through various special projects, we tackle critical issues such as access to healthcare, immigration justice, and consumer protection, making a lasting impact on the lives of vulnerable individuals.

• Legal Aid Through IL-AFLAN: PSLS is a proud member of the Illinois AFL-CIO Labor and Employment Law Assistance Network (IL-AFLAN), expanding our reach to assist workers facing unique legal challenges related to their employment rights, union grievances, and workplace safety.
