Long Beach Community Improvement League

Long Beach Community Improvement League (CIL) is a community-based nonprofit social service organization that has been providing high-quality and affordable child care services to the families of Long Beach and Signal Hill, California, since 1964. Over the past five decades, CIL has welcomed thousands of students and their families, and has earned praise and acclaim from city, state, and nationally elected officials for its outstanding array of programs.

As an anti-poverty agency, CIL's efforts for equity and justice were initially discouraged and challenged during the struggle for Civil Rights in the 1960s. However, with the strong support from the community members and local government leaders, CIL overcame all obstacles and has been standing strong for fifty wonderful years. CIL is committed to high-quality child care and development services, and truly believes that to succeed as a community, we must leave no child behind.

Our Services

CIL offers state subsidized child care and before/after school programs for low-income families in Long Beach and Signal Hill, California. During the summer months of July 1, 2023, to September 30, 2023, CIL is providing free child development, state preschool, and school-age programs for children ages 2.5 - 13, Monday - Friday, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. These programs are designed to provide educational and enrichment opportunities to children using developmentally appropriate curriculum, and to assess children's progress using the California Department of Education Developmental Profile Tool "DRDP." Parents will receive formal written reports on their child's progress based on the DRDP findings twice a year.

CIL's child care programs are fully licensed and accredited by the California Department of Education and the California Department of Social Services. Our programs are designed to meet the individual needs of each child, and our experienced and qualified staff provide a safe and nurturing environment where children can learn and grow.

Family Fees Waived

In an effort to support families during these challenging times, CIL has waived family fees for its Child Development, State Preschool, and School-Age Programs, funded by the California Department of Education and the California Department of Social Services, from July 1 to September 30, 2023. This means that families can access high-quality child care and development programs at no cost during this time period.

Enrollment is now open at the Long Beach Center, located at 2222 Olive Avenue, Long Beach, CA 90806, and at the Signal Hill Center, located at 2399 California Ave., Signal Hill, CA 90755. Space is limited, so interested families are encouraged to enroll as soon as possible.
