Our Story
Cleftstone Inn was built in 1881 by Charles T. How, a Boston attorney and the first real estate developer of Bar Harbor. Designed by renowned architect Bruce Price, who also designed the iconic Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City, this stunning mansion was originally a summer cottage built on a 100-acre property. Over the years, Cleftstone has been transformed into a sumptuous hotel that exudes elegance and sophistication.
History
With a fascinating history that spans over a century, Cleftstone Inn has been the summer residence of several prominent individuals, including Joseph Pulitzer, the New York publisher and originator of the Pulitzer Prize. Pulitzer would often spend his summers at Cleftstone, where he would be served by a servant who would read to him every night. The inn has also hosted notable guests such as Emmons Blaine, son of Secretary of State James G. Blaine, and President Taft, who attended a reception at the inn in 1911.
