About Our History

Bushfire Theatre of Performing Arts has a rich history dating back to 1977. Our journey began with a small group of dedicated artists who shared a vision of establishing a professional African-American theatre company. Over the years, we have grown and evolved, expanding our programming and services to better serve our community.

In 1983, we established the 52nd Street Writer's Workshop, which later evolved into the Langston Hughes Playwright's Workshop. Our commitment to developing African-American playwrights has resulted in many world premieres and critically acclaimed productions.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide a platform for African-American artists to showcase their talents, develop their craft, and connect with a wider audience. We strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment that celebrates the African-American experience and fosters artistic growth and collaboration.
