Crafting beauty from the earth, one piece at a time.
At Whynot Pottery and Acacia Art Tile, we are a family-owned business that has been a part of the Seagrove area for over 40 years. Our journey began when we moved to Whynot, NC in 1976 to live on our family farm and raise small livestock. Over the years, we have developed a unique style of work and a palette of glazes that complement the clay beneath. Our story began with pottery, and we are proud to say that we have been creating beautiful, handmade pieces for over four decades.
Our Process
We start our process by working with high-quality pre-mixed clay and forming our pots on the wheel and occasionally with clay that is rolled or extruded. After drying, our work is fired to about 1800 degrees Fahrenheit, which we call bisque temperature. At this point, our pieces are ready for glazing. We never use lead in our pottery, and our glazes are mixed on-site using a combination of feldspar, flint, clay, calcium carbonate, and wood ashes. We also add metallic oxides, mostly iron, for color.
Our Glaze Firing
The glaze firing process takes around 10 to 12 hours, during which time the interior temperature of our LP gas-fired kiln reaches 2350 degrees Fahrenheit. It takes two full days for the ware inside to cool enough to be handled. We also have an electric kiln for our tile work, which takes less time to reach 2232 degrees Fahrenheit and a day and a half for the ware inside to cool enough to be handled.

About Us
Our story began with a meeting called to establish a federal post office in the Seagrove area. As the people of the community considered different names, someone finally asked, "Why not call it Whynot and let's go home?" And so, we became Whynot Pottery. We are proud to be a part of this community and continue to create beautiful pieces that reflect our passion for art and beauty.
