Our Creed: Strive to be Better!
The Commons Law Center is a nonprofit law firm dedicated to revolutionizing access to basic legal services, education, and support for underserved Oregonians. We strive to bridge the gap between those who qualify for legal aid services and those who can afford private bar attorneys. Our goal is to create self-sustaining legal service programs that can be supported by earned fees, allowing charitable donations to be used as seed capital for new service offerings, community partnerships, and education programs. This approach ensures that our legal aid programs remain strong and capable of serving those most in need.
Our Team
Our team at The Commons Law Center is a dynamic and interconnected group of individuals, all working together to advance our mission. We are made up of full-time staff, new lawyer fellows, law clerks, and pro bono partners.
*Full-time Staff*: Our full-time staff includes our Executive Director, staff attorneys, and support team. These individuals are dedicated to supporting our mission on a career basis. We are building a law practice that works smarter, not harder, and our team is constantly challenged and rewarded by the help we are able to provide to Oregonians in need.
*New Lawyer Fellows*: Our new lawyer fellows are the engine room of our team. These individuals progress through our competency levels over the course of three years, and are mentored by on-staff senior attorneys, pro bono partners, and each other. Our goal is for them to leave the program with the tools they need to have a fulfilling, sustainable legal career.
*Law Clerks*: Law students working with us gain valuable experience in exchange for course credit, all while playing an important part in helping our clients. Our clerks are active participants in the legal services we provide and are essential to supporting our mission.
*Pro Bono Partners*: Our pro bono partners are experienced attorneys who provide guidance and supervision to our fellows and team. They leverage their skills and expertise to expand our capabilities and ensure our clients receive the highest quality legal work, typically without ever leaving their desk or talking to a client.
Our Legal Services
We offer a range of legal services, including:
*Family Law: We assist with transitions in families, including divorce, child custody, parenting time, and child and spousal support.
*Tenant Eviction Defense: We help protect your housing, including defense against eviction, unlawful lease termination, repairs and habitability issues, and expungement.
*Estate Planning: We help preserve your assets with services such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, healthcare directives, and inter-vivos transfers.
*Probate: We assist with transitions after a loss, including executor support, small estate affidavits, and trust administration.
