Our History

Nestled in the heart of California's stunning Yosemite National Park, Yosemite Trails has a rich history intertwined with the very landscape it traverses. Beginning in 1900, Newton Jasper Phillips, a homesteader, ventured into the backcountry of the Sierra Nevada, providing guides and packing services to the burgeoning number of tourists drawn to the area by the influential writings of John Muir and Teddy Roosevelt. This marked the genesis of a tradition rooted in a deep connection with these majestic mountains.

Over the decades, the family business evolved and thrived, changing hands and names along the way. In the 1930s, Fred and Beryl Wass established the Fred Wass Pack Outfit, building on the legacy established by Phillips. They secured a permit for 20 acres at Skidder Camp, a former logging outpost, solidifying their presence in the heart of Yosemite.

Yosemite Trails: A Family Legacy

In 1966, Mike and Sherry Knapp inherited this cherished tradition, transforming the Fish Camp Pack Station into Yosemite Trails Pack Station. Now operating as Yosemite Trails, the family continues to uphold the same commitment to personalized horse riding experiences and ecological responsibility that has defined their legacy. Larry Knapp, certified as a Master of "LEAVE NO TRACE" by the National Outdoor Leadership School, ensures that each experience is both unforgettable and sustainable.
