Our Mission and Values
At Oakland International High School, our mission is to provide a quality alternative education for recently arrived immigrant students in English language acquisition and preparation for college. We strive to empower immigrant youth, many of whom have faced significant challenges in their journey to the United States. Our values are rooted in the small schools movement, the Internationals Network for Public Schools, and the mission of the Oakland Unified School District.
Our Story
As a proud member of the Internationals Network, we are committed to transforming education for immigrant and refugee multilingual learners, including asylees and newcomer students. We are part of a network that plays a vital role in addressing the unique educational needs of immigrant and refugee students, with a strong focus on serving asylees and newcomer students like ours.

At Oakland International High School, we offer a range of services designed to support the educational and social-emotional needs of our students. Our services include:
Full-Service Community School
We are a full-service community school within the Oakland Unified School District, providing our students and their families with access to educational programs and social and emotional supports. Prospective families, educators, community partners, reporters, and neighbors are all welcome to visit our classes, parent programs, and after-school events to experience our school and learn more about our amazing students and families.
Learning Lab
Our Learning Lab partners with teacher education programs, the district English Language Learner and Multilingual Achievement Office, and educators around the Bay Area to train and develop educators who are eager to support the success of our newest students. We believe that teacher education and development are crucial to ensuring that our students receive the support they need.
Volunteer Opportunities
At OIHS, our primary needs are for long-term volunteers: volunteers who can commit to at least a semester (ideally, the whole school year) on a consistent basis. This allows volunteers to build relationships with students, staff, and program partners, and become a real part of our dynamic community.
Community Engagement
We believe that building relationships with our students, families, and community partners is essential to our mission. We support newcomer students and families through community walks, where students visit community centers to learn from Oakland community leaders and OIHS families. We also partner with local organizations to provide essential services and support to our students and their families.

Diversity and Exceptional Experience
The reviews highlight the exceptional experience of students at the school.
