Justice, Engagement, Collaboration, and Understanding
Who We Are
The Indian Child Welfare Act Law Center is a legal service provider and advocacy organization dedicated to preserving and reuniting Indian families. We are committed to upholding the principles and spirit of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA), a federal law enacted in 1978 to address the widespread separation of American Indian children from their families and tribes. Our mission is to strengthen, preserve, and reunite Indian families through the provision of high-quality legal services and advocacy.
Our Goals
Our primary goals include:
1. Providing the highest quality of legal services for Indian families affected by the child protection system.
2. Preserving and reuniting Indian families impacted by the child protection system.
3. Collaborating with Indian families, tribes, and child protection professionals to secure safe and loving homes for Indian children when out-of-home placement is necessary.
4. Advocating for the best interests of Indian children and their right to maintain family and tribal connections.
5. Ending disparities in the number of out-of-home placements of Indian children.
Our Values
Our values are rooted in the principles of justice, engagement, collaboration, and understanding:
1. Justice: We are committed to a culturally relevant, specific, and holistic approach to the delivery of legal services.

3. Collaboration: We believe in the essential role of working with each child's tribe and acknowledge the importance and necessity of state, tribal, and county child protection systems.
4. Understanding: We strive to promote knowledge and awareness of the significance of ICWA through historical and cultural perspectives.
Our Work
We focus exclusively on the Indian Child Welfare Act and provide the following services:
