Our Story
Founded in 1979 as The Simple Machine, the Charlton Sewing Center has blossomed into a beloved New England institution. We are lovingly housed in a renovated 110-year-old church, a magnificent structure imbued with history and architectural charm. This building, one of the most beautiful and historic churches in Worcester County, provides a truly unique backdrop for our sewing sanctuary.
Over the years, we have strived to create a welcoming space where sewing enthusiasts of all levels can find inspiration, community, and everything they need to pursue their passion. Our commitment to kindness and love has become the cornerstone of our business, fostering a warm and inclusive atmosphere where everyone feels valued and supported.
What We Offer
The Charlton Sewing Center is more than just a store; it's a destination for those who love sewing and quilting. Visitors are greeted by an array of treasures within our 2,100 square feet of retail space. A delightful gift shop offers unique and handmade items, while a curated fabric and book store invites exploration and discovery.
A towering thread inventory, housed in the former choir loft, ensures that every sewing project can be completed with the perfect shade and texture. The ambiance is further enriched by the historical presence of antique sewing machines, displayed with care and reverence for their craftsmanship and heritage.
Each month, the store features a different sewing exhibit, showcasing the talents and creativity of local artists and designers. These exhibits, artfully arranged amongst the stained glass windows and the original pipe organ, create a truly immersive and inspiring experience.
Supporting the Sewing Community
Beyond our retail offerings, the Charlton Sewing Center is deeply invested in strengthening the local sewing, quilting, beading, and textile art retail community. We believe in collaboration and supporting the growth and success of fellow makers and businesses.
We also actively engage in community service initiatives, partnering with organizations like ALZHEIMER'S, Habitat for Humanity-Operation Playhouse, and Quilts of Valor to make a positive impact.
Our commitment to our customers extends beyond the transactional. We believe in fostering a sense of community and belonging, welcoming everyone with open arms and a warm cup of tea.
Looking Ahead
As we continue to grow and evolve, the Charlton Sewing Center remains dedicated to providing our customers with exceptional products, inspiring experiences, and unwavering support.
We are committed to introducing new products, hosting engaging exhibits, and continually expanding our knowledge and expertise in the sewing and textile art world. We are excited to embark on this journey alongside our valued customers, fostering a thriving and vibrant sewing community in New England and beyond.
