Our Mission and History

At the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center, our mission is to support survivors of rape and sexual abuse, promote healing and prevention, and advocate for social change. Our vision is the elimination of sexual violence.

For over 45 years, we have been committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for survivors of sexual assault to receive the help and services they need. Our organization began in 1974, when two dedicated women, Lynn Hammond and Carrie Zander, founded our hotline in response to the growing need for services to assist survivors of sexual assault in Cleveland.

Over the years, we have grown from a grassroots, volunteer-run hotline service to a comprehensive organization offering a range of services, including 24-hour support, individual counseling, advocacy, and education programs. Our services are available to survivors of any gender identity or age, as well as their loved ones.

Our Services

We offer a variety of services to support survivors of rape and sexual abuse, including:

  • 24-Hour Services: Our helpline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to provide immediate support and guidance to survivors of rape and sexual abuse.
  • Individual Counseling: Our trained therapists offer one-on-one counseling sessions to help survivors process their experiences and work through their emotions.
  • Advocacy: Our advocates provide emotional support, information, and help navigating the criminal justice system and medical and counseling services.
  • Support Groups: We offer support groups for survivors of rape and sexual abuse to connect with others who have experienced similar situations.
  • Child and Family Services: We provide services specifically designed for children and families who have been affected by sexual abuse.
  • Support for Survivors of Human Trafficking: We offer specialized services for survivors of human trafficking, including counseling and support groups.
  • Support for Deaf Survivors: We provide American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters and other accommodations to ensure our services are accessible to deaf and hard-of-hearing survivors.

At the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center, we are committed to providing high-quality services that meet the unique needs of each survivor. We are dedicated to:

  • Excellence in Service: We strive for excellence in all aspects of our services, from our responses to our 24-hour hotline to our counseling sessions.
