Our Story
M.A.R.E. (Mastering Abilities Riding Equines) was founded in 1990 by a group of dedicated individuals, including Diane Hopkins, Ron, Dorothy, and Matt Evans, Angela, and Mary Litterilla, with the help of a wonderful Arabian mare named Tana. This marked the beginning of a therapeutic riding program designed to provide special needs children and adults in Kern County with the freedom of movement, freedom of spirit, and freedom from judgment. Today, M.A.R.E. continues to provide "hope on horseback" for exceptional equestrians in Kern County.
Our Mission
At M.A.R.E., we believe in the acceptance of all individuals and their unique qualities and abilities. We focus on abilities and not disabilities, working to increase each individual's potential. We educate the community about the use of horses in improving each rider's quality of life. We strive to make a positive impact on the lives of those we serve, providing a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment that fosters growth, confidence, and independence.
