Growing Knowledge, Growing Community
The Lee County Master Gardeners of Alabama are a group of dedicated volunteers who are passionate about gardening and community service. Our organization is part of the Extension Master Gardener Program, which educates volunteers in science-based gardening and landscape practices. We help extend research-based information to the public through various programs and projects.
Our Mission
Our primary role is that of "educator." We strive to educate the public about gardening and landscape practices through our "Help Line, " which is available to answer your garden and landscape questions spring-through-fall. We also offer a variety of garden-related programs and workshops for the public, construct and maintain community demonstration gardens, and help implement community projects.
History of the Master Gardener Program
The Master Gardener program originated in Washington State to enable the Washington State University (WSU) Cooperative Extension to better serve the public. In the early 1970s, interest in home gardening mushroomed, and the program was established to address the overwhelming demand for horticultural information. Today, Master Gardeners like ourselves are trained volunteers who serve as educators in their communities.
Services Offered
We offer a range of services, including a "Help Line" for garden and landscape questions, garden-related programs and workshops, construction and maintenance of community demonstration gardens, and implementation of community projects. We also conduct a mid-May garden tour every other year to showcase successful local gardens and raise funds for our projects and programs.
