Our History

The Lakota Federal Credit Union was established in 2012 by a group of visionary community leaders with a dream to provide essential banking services to the people of the Pine Ridge Reservation. Following the Indian Recognition Act of 1935, the reservation had been without its own financial institution. A steering committee, comprised of local experts and supporters, worked diligently to bring the first federally-insured credit union to the reservation. After years of dedicated effort, the Lakota Federal Credit Union received its charter in August 2012 and opened its doors the following November.
