*Our Story*

The story of Augustin Lumber Company is woven into the fabric of Loretto, Tennessee. Founded on New Year's Day, 1900, by William Henry Augustin with partners H.W. Neidert and Mathias Meiers, the company began as Meiers, Augustin & Company, offering both rough and dressed lumber to the burgeoning local community. Back then, $40 per acre was a significant investment, but the founders boldly purchased land along the banks of Mill Creek, a vital resource that powered their sawmill operation with steam until 1957. Legend whispers that a portion of this land once hosted horse races attended by none other than Andrew Jackson in the early 19th century.

By 1920, William Henry Augustin had bought out his partners, assuming sole ownership of the burgeoning enterprise. He skillfully navigated the turbulent years of the 1920s and 30s, providing a beacon of stability during the Great Depression. Even when economic times were bleakest, W.H. Augustin kept the sawmill running, offering vital jobs and paying cash for timber, easing the financial strain on local families. His commitment to his community was unwavering, solidifying his legacy as a pillar of strength.

In 1944, the reins of the company were passed down to the next generation, with ownership divided among his children. The name was officially changed to Augustin Lumber Company, marking a new chapter in its storied history. By the early 1950s, the operation had blossomed into a thriving business, annually producing over three million feet of lumber. This remarkable success saw Augustin Lumber supplying builders and lumber yards across a wide radius, reaching as far as Franklin, Pulaski, and Savannah, Tennessee, and even parts of Northern Alabama, all renowned for the quality of materials and competitive prices.

Then, in 1957, a devastating fire swept through the mill, consuming thousands of feet of lumber and half a century of memories. It seemed like the end of an era. But, much like the mythical phoenix rising from ashes, Augustin Lumber Company regrouped, determined to persevere. They purchased replacement equipment from a Mississippi mill and, with unyielding spirit, rebuilt the business, ensuring its continued legacy.

Mill Creek, the lifeblood of the operation, presented its own challenges. The creek, prone to flooding, wreaked havoc in 1975 when it overflowed its banks, washing lumber from sheds and brick from their stacks. Subsequent floods in 1997 further tested their resilience, causing damage to lumber stockpiled along the east side of Second Street.

Yet, Augustin Lumber Company endured, proving their steadfast commitment to quality and service. A century after its humble beginnings, the business remains in the hands of W.H. Augustin's descendants, a testament to his vision and the enduring spirit of a family dedicated to craftsmanship and community. They continue to provide building materials, upholding the legacy of the Augustin family and serving Southern Middle Tennessee and Northern Alabama.
