As a Washington, DC-based potter, I, John Riley, create one-of-a-kind ceramics that bring joy and functionality to everyday life. With a passion for pottery, I combine traditional techniques with contemporary flair to produce unique pieces that evoke a sense of connection to nature, family, and community.

My Journey

As an artist, I began my creative journey as a painter, exploring various mediums before discovering the world of pottery. In 2008, I started taking pottery classes, which sparked a profound connection to the craft. My journey led me to Omaha Clayworks in Nebraska, where I served as an Artist-in-Residence from May 2011 to November 2011. I then apprenticed with Hinckley Pottery in DC, where I honed my skills and developed a deeper understanding of the craft.

Inspiration and Influences

As an artist, I draw inspiration from the natural world, urban landscapes, and the vibrant energy of Washington, DC. The beauty of cherry blossom trees, water lilies, and the District's diverse neighborhoods guide my creative process. I find solace in the stillness of nature and the simple joys of family gatherings around the dinner table.

My Approach

Craftsmanship and attention to detail are paramount in my work. Each piece is handcrafted from start to finish, fired in a gas kiln or wood kiln, and imbued with a sense of history and tradition. My approach is rooted in a deep respect for the materials, the firing process, and the human connection that comes with holding and using handmade ceramics.

Care and Maintenance

As a ceramicist, I prioritize durability and functionality. My high-fire stoneware and porcelain pieces are designed to withstand daily use, with careful consideration given to glaze composition and temperature firings. Proper care and maintenance ensure the longevity of your piece, allowing you to enjoy it for generations to come.

John Riley Pottery is available for purchase through my Etsy shop and at local markets and pop-ups in and around Washington, DC. Custom orders are currently not accepted due to a high volume of orders. However, I welcome inquiries for custom commissions and wholesale opportunities.
