A History of Empowerment and Advocacy

Founded in 1986, The National Mental Health Consumers' Self-Help Clearinghouse stands as a testament to the power of peer support and empowerment. Born from the vision of founder Joseph Rogers, the Clearinghouse was the first national technical assistance center built and run by individuals with lived experience of mental illness. This grassroots movement championed social justice for people with psychiatric diagnoses and provided a vital space for recovery and transformation.
