Empowering Home Gardeners Through Education and Community
Passionate about gardening? Then the Portsmouth Master Gardeners Association is for you! A non-profit organization supported by Virginia Tech Master Gardener program, PMGAs are dedicated to enriching the community through gardening education, outreach, and beautification projects.
What We Do
Our dedicated team of volunteers offers a variety of services to the community, including:
Outreach & Education
- Hosting garden talks and workshops on diverse gardening topics like vegetable gardening, rose care, and drought-tolerant plants.
- Providing informative talks to community groups and schools.
- Offering hands-on workshops on activities like rainwater harvesting and starting a vegetable garden.
Community Involvement
- Maintaining beautiful gardens at local public spaces.
- Partnering with local organizations to plant and maintain gardens in underserved areas.
- Organizing garden tours and plant sales to raise funds for local projects.
Project Support
- Providing expert consultation and troubleshooting for gardeners facing challenges.
- Offering a speaker's bureau for events and conferences.
- Conducting soil testing and offering recommendations for improving soil health.
Engaging the Community
- Hosting the annual Spring Open Garden and Plant Sale, a popular community event featuring an array of perennials, annuals, and vegetables.
- Maintaining an active online presence with informative blog posts, news updates, and gardening resources.
