For almost three decades, Landesign, Inc., has been a respected architect of outdoor spaces around Boston's premier North Shore and Cape Ann properties. It has established quality and excellence in landscape design, site planning, and project management, continually striving to raise the standard - and value - of outside living. Douglas Cook, a Manchester-by-the-Sea native with a deep appreciation and understanding of the region's unique environment, founded the firm in 1987. He is an architectural graduate of the University of Massachusetts who learned the practical skills early in his career and developed the firm through personal relationships and knowledge of the industry.

From a cozy granite fire pit on the patio to sweeping flower gardens accentuating a new deck, our design incorporate the best materials available to bring your outdoor space to life. A space you think you can do nothing with often has loads of potential. We look at the outdoors differently and are able to create a useful and enjoyable space that helps bring your property to life. What you may view as a negative, we look at as a positive. We work from the ground up. No two yards are alike. Especially on Cape Ann, every nook and cranny is unique to the next. So we approach every new project with open eyes along with a deep understanding of what works and what doesn't in this particular climate and its temperamental weather.

Design Process

To start with, we utilize any existing documentation available either from the home owner or through public records that help to establish a base plan. A site analysis will be conducted which involves the measuring, photographing, and mapping of existing conditions. Once we've gathered all the pertinent information, we go through a process of conceptualizing new ideas, educating you on your options, and costs of the various solutions. The conceptual phase of the design process allows you to fully understand the ways in which to optimize the potential in your property. From natural stone outcroppings, native plant materials, and indigenous stone products, we incorporate the region's natural materials and plant life to help your home blend into its surroundings. Concepts that meet your approval are developed into a final design that give you or your contractors exactly what they need to get the job done right. Depending on your preferences, we can manage the project at all levels to ensure the work matches the design intent and the installations are done efficiently.
