Our Legacy

Chicago Tattooing & Piercing Company began its journey in the mid-1960s as Cliff Raven Tattooing at 900 W. Belmont Ave. Cliff Raven, a talented artist with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University, cultivated a unique and highly sought-after style. His shop quickly became the go-to destination for Chicagoans seeking high-quality tattoos. The landscape of tattooing underwent a significant shift in the late 1960s when Illinois raised the age requirement to get a tattoo to 21 due to a hepatitis outbreak in New York. This change drastically impacted the existing tattoo parlors along South State Street, many of which relied heavily on sailors from the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in North Chicago. As a result, numerous studios closed their doors, but Cliff Raven's remained standing, solidifying its position as Chicago's premiere tattoo destination.

A Focus on Safety and Innovation

Recognizing the importance of hygiene and safety in the tattoo industry, Cliff Raven partnered with Buddy "Mac" McFall in 1970. Mac, a retired army sergeant with 15 years of tattooing experience and a clean Carney style, brought his expertise and commitment to health practices to the shop. They pioneered the use of a steam autoclave for instrument sterilization and single-service inks, practices that were unheard of at the time. Their dedication to safety and innovation set a new standard for the industry and helped to alleviate concerns surrounding tattooing.
