Our Mission and History

Welcome to the The Private Investigators Association of Virginia Inc website! PIAVA, as we are commonly known, is a 501c (6) non-profit organization consisting of members who may be: 1. A Private Investigator registered with the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (VA DCJS)*. 2. A private investigator or equivalent credentialed in a state or jurisdiction other than Virginia. 3. An individual working in any private security services or related industry. * In the Commonwealth of Virginia, the definition of Private Investigator, in pertinent part, is: ".any individual who engages in the business of, or accepts employment to make, investigations to obtain information on crimes or civil wrongs; the location, disposition, or recovery of stolen property; the cause of accidents, fires, damages, or injuries to persons or to property; or evidence to be used before any court, board, officer, or investigative committee." Every PIAVA member pledges to conduct his or her activities in accordance with the professional Code of Ethics of the association. Our members routinely share information, resources, training and business opportunities, and strive to increase public awareness of the value of hiring properly credentialed Private Investigations Businesses and Private Investigators with competencies and skill sets suited for each particular engagement. The association is actively involved in monitoring legislation and regulations affecting private investigators and equivalents in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and promoting change for the betterment of our community.
