Johns Grocery

At John's Grocery, we're more than just a store; we're a part of the rich history of Iowa City. Since John and Erma Alberhasky bought the grocery business in 1948, we've been dedicated to providing the community with top-quality products and exceptional service.

Our building, located at 401 E. Market Street, was built in 1848, making it only two years younger than the State of Iowa itself. Over the years, the building has served various purposes, including a grocery store, apartment building, saloon, barbershop, fire station, office space, and even a factory for the Ernste Manufacturing Company. Despite these changes, the building has always functioned as a service to the community, and we're proud to continue that tradition.

Our story began with Samuel Baker, who ran the frontier grocery for 40 years until his death in 1884. After his passing, the building underwent its first major addition, and in 1893, Jacob Morh opened a saloon in the new part of the building. Over the next 22 years, the saloon changed hands multiple times before becoming a barbershop in 1915. The upstairs of the building housed several businesses, including a toilet cream factory, cigar factory, and dance hall.

In 1928, the grocery moved out of the south portion of the building and into the main area, where it remained until John Alberhasky purchased the business in 1948. Since then, we've been dedicated to honoring the history of our building and providing the Iowa City and surrounding communities with great products and service.

Today, John's Grocery is more than just a grocery store. We offer an extensive selection of imported beer and microbrews, carefully chosen by our experts. Our wine collection encompasses all major appellations, represented in both old and new world styles. We also have Iowa City's best selection of high-end spirits, including rare and prized bottles.

In addition to our beverage options, we offer a variety of gourmet groceries and catering services for small to large events. Our team is dedicated to ensuring that every customer leaves satisfied, whether they're looking for a unique bottle of wine or planning a special event.
