At Snell Family Farm, we are more than just a farm. We are a family that has been dedicated to growing food and flowers for our neighbors here in Maine since 1926. Our farm, located in Southern Maine, has evolved over the years, adapting to the changing needs of our customers while maintaining our commitment to providing high-quality farm products and a connection to the natural beauty of Maine's seasons.

Our History

Our farm's story began when Henry Snell moved to the Buxton farm in search of a healthier lifestyle to help him recover from tuberculosis. He and his wife, Ruth, and their six children began raising poultry for meat and egg production, selling their farm products locally in Saco and Biddeford. Over time, the farm expanded to include a small apple orchard, which Henry planted and tended to, eventually growing into a successful apple business that supplied fresh fruit to the Boston area.

Years later, John Snell Jr., Henry's grandson, took over the farm and continued the apple business. However, he also saw an opportunity to diversify the farm's offerings. He began growing vegetables, especially fall crops, to sell alongside the apples. His wife, Ramona Anderson, brought her own farming background and love for growing vegetables, and together they expanded the farm's product offerings.

In the early 1980s, the Snells decided to install window boxes on the roadside stand to add some color and interest. To their surprise, customers were more interested in the plants than the produce they were selling. This sparked an idea for the Snells, and they began planning their first greenhouse to raise flowering plants. Ramona's mother, Rita, and sisters, Louisa and Wanda, were instrumental in helping with the new greenhouse, and the success of this venture led to the construction of additional greenhouses.

In 1998, the Snells started their Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, allowing customers to invest in the farm by pre-buying farm products. This program has been incredibly successful, and we are grateful for the support of our community. Over the years, we have added new crops, tried different growing techniques, and even introduced a Pick Your Own Raspberries feature in 2005.

Our Services

At Snell Family Farm, we offer a variety of services to meet the needs of our customers. Whether you're looking for fresh produce, beautiful flowers, or simply a chance to connect with nature, we have something for everyone.

Our farm stand, located in Buxton, is open Wednesday through Sunday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Here, you can find a wide selection of fresh vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers, as well as our famous homemade baked goods. We also participate in the Portland Farmers' Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays, providing another convenient location for our customers to purchase our products.

In addition to our farm stand and market appearances, we offer a variety of workshops and classes designed to teach customers about sustainable farming practices, plant care, and cooking techniques. These workshops provide a unique opportunity for our customers to learn from our experienced farmers and connect with the land and the food they eat.

For those looking for a more immersive farm experience, we offer a Pick Your Own Raspberries feature, allowing customers to pick their own fresh raspberries right from the field. This is a fun and educational experience for both children and adults, providing a chance to learn about sustainable farming practices while enjoying the beautiful scenery of our farm.

Finally, we offer a Bouquet of the Month subscription service, where customers can receive a monthly delivery of fresh, locally grown flowers. This service is perfect for those who love having fresh flowers in their home or office and want to support local agriculture.
