The Kitchen Theatre Company (KTC) is dedicated to creating bold theatre that sparks important conversations and engages the community. Our mission is to be leaders in creating art that explores humanity from multiple perspectives, connecting the work on our stage to the depth and breadth of the human experience. Established in 1991, KTC has been a hub for talented and determined young artists to hone their craft. Over the years, we have produced over 200 plays, including 34 world premieres, featuring works by renowned playwrights. Our commitment to equity and diversity ensures that our productions reflect the complexity of the world we live in.
Our story began with Matt Tauber and Tim O'Brien, who envisioned a space where artists could collaborate and push boundaries. The company's early years were marked by a passion for innovative storytelling and a desire to challenge societal norms. Under the artistic leadership of Norm Johnson, Jr., we continued to evolve, premiering thought-provoking works that resonated with our community. In 2010, we took a significant step forward by becoming the first theatre company in Ithaca to own our own space, thanks to a successful fundraising campaign. This move allowed us to expand our reach and deepen our impact.
Throughout our history, we have been fortunate to have had visionary leaders at the helm. Rachel Lampert, our Artistic Director Emerita, played a pivotal role in establishing our reputation for producing new works and engaging underserved audiences. Her legacy continues to inspire us. M. Bevin O'Gara, who succeeded Rachel, brought a wealth of experience and a commitment to diversity, leading the company to new heights of artistic and financial success. David Winitsky, our Interim Producing Artistic Director during the pandemic, ensured the organization's continuity. Now, under the leadership of Rebecca Bradshaw and Cary Bland Simpson, we are poised to continue our mission with renewed energy and a focus on the future.
At KTC, we believe that theatre has the power to transform and to bring people together. We strive to create an inclusive environment where artists can flourish and where audiences can engage in meaningful dialogue. Join us as we continue to push the boundaries of what theatre can be.
