Who We Are

J.L. Apter Memorial Chapels is a 4th generation non-profit Jewish funeral home with a rich history of serving the Jewish community in Essex, Morris, Somerset, Sussex, and Warren counties. Our organization was founded by Philip Apter in 1902 and has been committed to providing exceptional service and support to families in their time of need. Our mission is to serve and financially assist the Jewish communities in our service area by offering affordable funeral options, while donating to organizations that benefit the Jewish community.

Our Story

The J.L. Apter Memorial Chapels has its beginnings in Newark, NJ in 1902, with the founding of Philip Apter and Son. My great grandfather, Philip Apter, arrived from Europe with my great grandmother Olga and, after the birth of their first son, started the funeral home. Years later, my father of blessed memory, Philip "Buddy" Apter, instilled in me the desire to continue in the funeral business. He also instilled in me the philosophy of tzedakah, or charity. He volunteered his time for the blind, as well as raising donations for diabetes research, and today, I volunteer on several boards that support our community. As a matter of fact, my wife and I volunteered many years in EMS helping those in need of immediate medical attention. I am now passing on the philosophy of tzedakah to my children. The J. L. Apter Memorial Chapels proudly donates up to $500 from every full service funeral to either the synagogue of the family's membership or to organizations such as Jewish Family Services and United Jewish Communities.

Our Locations

Our locations permit us to serve the Jewish communities of Essex, Morris, Somerset, Sussex, and Warren counties centrally and conveniently. Our chapels are easily accessible by major highways and airports, making it easy for families to attend funeral services and commemorations.

Our Services

We are the only Jewish funeral home in our service area offering green funeral options. Our experienced staff is committed to providing compassionate care and professional guidance throughout the funeral planning process.
