Empowering Individuals, Enriching Communities
At Kansas Legal Services, we are committed to providing equal access to justice for the most vulnerable Kansans. As a non-profit law firm and community education organization, we are dedicated to helping low and moderate-income individuals in Kansas meet their basic needs through the provision of important legal and mediation services.
Our Mission
Our mission is to provide high-quality legal assistance to those who need it most. We believe that every individual deserves access to justice, regardless of their income or social status. Our team of experienced attorneys and staff work tirelessly to ensure that our clients receive the best possible legal representation, and we are proud to have served over 18,500 individuals in all 105 counties across the state last year.
Our Services
We offer a wide range of legal services, including legal assistance, mediation, and community education. Our legal services cover a variety of topics, including consumer law, family law, housing, and expungement. We also provide free legal forms and resources to help individuals navigate the legal system. Our mediation services are designed to help individuals resolve disputes in a fair and impartial manner, and our community education programs aim to empower individuals with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate the legal system.
Our History
Kansas Legal Services has a long history of providing legal aid to the poor. The concept of legal aid was first recognized by the American Bar Association in the 1920s and 30s, and state and local bar associations worked to promote legal aid societies throughout the following decades. In the mid-1960s and 70s, legal aid societies were formed in Topeka, Wichita, and Kansas City, and in 1974, these societies merged to form Kansas Legal Services.
Our Partners
We are proud to partner with a number of organizations to provide legal services to those in need. These partners include the Legal Services Corporation, the Kansas Bar Association, and local community organizations. We also receive funding from the state of Kansas and private donations to support our work.
