The Devon Yacht Club, located on the shores of Gardiner's Bay in Amagansett, New York, is a private, member-owned organization dedicated to family, friendship, and community. Established in 1908 as the Gardiner's Bay Boat Club, the Devon Yacht Club, Inc. was incorporated in 1916, with founding members including William S. Rowe, Colonel William Cooper Proctor, Joseph Rawson, and Richmond Levering. For over a century, our members have raced and sailed for pleasure in the protected waters of Gardiner's Bay, one of the finest sailing venues on the east coast.
At Devon Yacht Club, we encourage and promote the sport of yachting, the science of seamanship and navigation, and the sport of tennis. Our club provides opportunities for sailing instruction, sailing for pleasure, and more serious racing, with our members having competed in many national and international events. In addition to sailing, we offer exceptional tennis and bridge programs, as well as a stunning setting for dining overlooking Gardiner's Bay.
Community Involvement
Devon Yacht Club has a long-standing commitment to actively contributing to the communities of Amagansett and East Hampton. Over the years, our members have donated land for the benefit of fellow residents, including the site for the Amagansett Library, 130 acres on the bay encompassing Fresh Pond, Albert's Landing and Little Albert's Landing beaches, and 1,300 acres running from the bay to the ocean, now known as Napeague State Park.
The Club supports various community service, educational, and environmental organizations, including the Amagansett Fire Department, Historical and Village Improvement Societies, the East Hampton Town Shellfish Hatchery, and the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research. In response to the Covid-19 crisis, the Club has donated to the East Hampton and Amagansett Ambulance Associations and the East Hampton and Springs food pantries.
Every year, Devon Yacht Club awards Gardiner's Bay college scholarships to East Hampton high school seniors who demonstrate an interest in preserving our marine environment. Since 1947, we have hosted an annual 4th of July fireworks display by the Grucci Family for our members and neighbors in Amagansett and East Hampton.
Sailing Programs and Opportunities
Our professional sailing staff delivers instruction using the Club's 23ft Sonars, fleet of Sunfish and Lasers. The Devon Junior Yacht program provides instruction in a variety of dinghies including Optimists, Sunfish, Lasers, and Club 420s. Campers compete in numerous PGJSA regattas on the East End and in Connecticut. Weekly one-design racing occurs from June through September, with one of the largest fleets of Alerion Express 28s in the United States as well as one-design Dinghy and PHRF racing.
The Club welcomes youth and adult sailors to enjoy the steady breezes and safe sailing conditions of Gardiner's Bay. The annual Peconic Gardiner's Junior Sailing Association (PGJSA) regatta draws hundreds of youth sailors from all over Suffolk County. The Club has hosted sailors from the North and South Forks for more than 50 years to compete in the 24-mile Lawrence E. Clarke 'Round Gardiner's Island Race.
