Our Mission

The Valpo Surf Project (VSP) is driven by a profound commitment to empower underprivileged and at-risk youth in Valparaiso, Chile, through the transformative power of surfing, academic support, and environmental stewardship. We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential, and we strive to create a supportive and nurturing environment where they can thrive.

Rooted in Community

Valparaiso, a vibrant city nestled amidst the foothills of the Andes with its breathtaking Pacific coastline, holds a unique allure. Yet, despite its beauty, the city grapples with significant challenges, including poverty, crime, and limited access to educational resources. VSP operates within the city's poorest neighborhoods, where the impact of these challenges is most acute. We recognize that many of our students lack positive role models and struggle with limited educational and social support systems.

Beyond the Waves: A Holistic Approach

VSP's approach is deeply holistic, recognizing that a child's well-being extends far beyond the waves. Our programs are designed to address multiple facets of a student's life, fostering growth and development in three key areas: surf, academics, and environment.

Surf sessions serve as a crucial anchor point, providing a space for our students to escape the pressures of daily life, engage in invigorating physical activity, and cultivate a deep connection with the ocean. These sessions are not simply recreational; they build confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging.

Academic support is equally vital, offering English classes tailored to their needs, personalized tutoring to address individual learning styles, and preparation for college and career pathways. Through education, we empower students to break free from cycles of poverty and forge brighter futures for themselves.

Our environmental initiatives cultivate a sense of responsibility toward the planet, encouraging active citizenship and leadership. Students participate in hands-on projects, learn about sustainable practices, and become stewards of their environment.

A Legacy of Growth and Impact

Since its inception in 2009, VSP has witnessed remarkable growth, transforming the lives of hundreds of young people. What began with a small group of four friends and a handful of surfboards has blossomed into a vibrant organization impacting the lives of over 650 students and engaging the support of thousands of volunteers.

We have expanded our reach to five communities, offering over 12,000 instances of participation in our diverse programs. More than 5,000 hours of mentorship have been dedicated to guiding and supporting our students, fostering a sense of community and providing invaluable role models.

VSP's success is a testament to the belief that every young person deserves a chance to thrive. We are deeply grateful for the unwavering support of our dedicated staff, passionate volunteers, and generous donors, all of whom contribute to the transformative journey we share with our students.
