Our History

Our story began in 1971, when Chuck Dorr first discovered his passion for woodcarving. He started his business, initially called "The Carving Place, " with his instructor Paul McCarthy. After four years, Chuck decided to venture out on his own, teaming up with sign carver David Hassan. This partnership flourished, and they worked together for seven years before parting ways. Chuck and his future wife Dale moved to Appleton, Maine in 1985, where they continued to build their business, focusing on hand-carved signs. In 1992, they purchased a property on Route 1 in Rockport, Maine, renovated it, and built a new shop, which is now the home of Dorr Woodcarving & Sign Co.

At Dorr Woodcarving & Sign Co., every sign is meticulously hand-crafted from start to finish. We use high-quality materials, such as HDU or Sign Foam, and carefully select each material to ensure a durable and long-lasting finished product. From incising letters with a single utility knife to applying 23-karat gold leaf, every detail is considered to achieve perfection.
