Our Story
Welcome aboard the Shawnodese, a vessel with a rich and fascinating history. Built in 1966 in sunny San Diego, our boat began its journey as a ferry service connecting the mainland to Coronado Island. After a few years of carrying passengers, it set sail for Lake Mead, where it transformed into a tour and fishing boat, proudly displaying its six-pack license. During this era, it was powered by twin diesel engines positioned midships, coupled with a direct shaft and rudder system.
Lake Mead proved to be a vibrant chapter in the Shawnodese's story, but its adventures weren't over. It eventually made its way to San Francisco, taking on a new role as a crew boat. Its mission was to ferry personnel to and fro from larger vessels, ensuring the smooth operation of the bustling harbor. Beyond transporting crew, the Shawnodese also played a crucial role in laying vital cables across the San Francisco Bay, contributing to the region's vital infrastructure.
By the early 1980s, the Shawnodese embarked on a different kind of voyage: a journey of transition and potential. Stripped of its existing machinery, it was shipped eastward to Idaho as part of a business settlement, marking a significant shift in its destiny. For a decade, the Shawnodese patiently awaited its next transformation, its hull silently resting, harboring dreams of a new life upon the tranquil waters of Lake Pend Oreille.
Finding Its Purpose
Fate intervened in 1992 when the founders of Lake Pend Oreille Cruises recognized the Shawnodese's potential. Recognizing the vessel's strong bones and sturdy construction, they purchased the hull and set about realizing their vision for a unique Lake Pend Oreille cruising experience. The Shawnodese was transported to Sagle, Idaho, where it remained dormant for several more months as plans were meticulously drawn and approved by the US Coast Guard. Finally, in 1995, the vessel was reborn, christened anew and launched onto the pristine waters of Lake Pend Oreille.
This transformation represented the most significant change the Shawnodese had ever undergone. The once bustling ferry was now equipped with a single, powerful diesel engine coupled with an outdrive system, providing superior maneuverability. A fully enclosed lower deck was added, offering guests a comfortable and sheltered space, while an open upper deck became the perfect spot for soaking in the breathtaking scenery.
Today, the Shawnodese embodies the perfect blend of history and modern comfort. Its 15-ton hull, constructed from aluminum, wood, and metal, is a testament to its enduring strength. The interior, adorned with rich mahogany, provides a warm and inviting atmosphere, a beautiful contrast to the sleek aluminum exterior.
