Sewanee Children's Center

We are dedicated to supporting every child's creativity, empathy, and sense of self in a responsive, playful, and engaging environment. Our cooperative preschool program is designed to meet the developmental needs of each child and is responsive to the needs of local families and children. The Center is licensed by the state of Tennessee under the Department of Human Services and is a Three-Star agency-the highest rating possible. We are also an exempt organization under section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code.

Meet Our Director: Sarah Ralston Stark

Sarah transitioned from a teacher to our Director in early 2022. She has previously worked as a substitute, then part-time teacher, and full-time teacher for the past three years at SCC. Her steady demeanor and kindness are a calming presence in our center. She believes that children learn best through play, exploration, and following their curiosity. Sarah holds a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting from Anderson University in Indiana, although she has always had an interest in working creatively with young children.

Our Curriculum and Activities

Our curriculum is designed to meet the Tennessee Early Learning Developmental Standards. We provide age-appropriate, stimulating, and active learning experiences that include large and small group instructions, indoor and outdoor learning centers, and field trips. Our school day includes a variety of activities such as morning meetings, snack time, outside play, center time, lunch, nap or quiet time, and closing activities. We also offer special classes like music, yoga, dance, and French. We welcome the participation of our families and community members to enrich our program.
