Our History

Wenger Meats has a rich history rooted in the heart of Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The story began in the 1920s with the Carlisle Hygienic Ice Company, a business that provided block ice and freezer locker rentals. This enterprise served the community well until the advent of home refrigerators and freezers gradually reduced the demand for ice storage. In 1964, a devastating fire severely damaged the Carlisle Hygienic Cold Storage Company building, marking a turning point for the property.

Seizing an opportunity, the Wenger family purchased the business in 1978. With a vision to transform the space, they expanded operations to include retail meat sales, catering services, a deli, and the distribution of packaged ice to local convenience stores, beverage distributors, and supermarkets. This strategic diversification ensured the business's continued success and solidified its place as a cornerstone of the community.

Over the years, Wenger Meats has continued to evolve and expand. In 1997-98, a major remodeling and expansion project resulted in the modern, customer-friendly store that stands today on East Louther Street. This investment in their space reflected their commitment to providing a welcoming and convenient shopping experience. Furthermore, Wenger Meats acquired the Newport Ice Company in 2000, further strengthening its presence in the region.

In 2007, the company embraced a new frontier with the addition of a smokehouse at its Newport location. This marked a significant expansion into the realm of wild game processing, introducing a line of venison and other wild game products. The smokehouse also became the birthplace of Wenger Meats' own handcrafted gourmet items, including sweet bologna, ring bologna, snack sticks, jerky, smoked hams, and bacon.
