Our History

The Gross Lumber Company's roots were established in the late 1890s by Owen C. Gross, who initially worked as a bookkeeper in the lumber business. In 1913, Owen, along with his business partner, Mr. Basore, operated the business as Gross & Basore, which primarily focused on coal yards and grain elevators. By 1926, Owen became the sole owner of the business and began transitioning it into a full-service lumber yard. He retired in 1950, leaving behind a legacy that would continue for generations to come.

In 1945, Jim Gross, Sr. returned to the business after serving in the war. He was instrumental in laying the foundation for the Gross Lumber Company as it is known today and also served on the first village council/board. In 1974, his son, Jim Gross Jr., joined the business after teaching at Carlisle schools for five years. He moved the business to its current location in 1980, continuing the family's commitment to providing quality materials and exceptional service to the community.
