Blue Heron Farm

Blue Heron Farm is a 130-acre family-run diversified farm situated at 1500 feet on the eastern slopes of the Berkshire Hills in Western Massachusetts. The farm has been continuously farmed since at least 1797, and the Coli family, who purchased the land in 1975, takes pride in maintaining its rich farming history. The farm is owned and operated by Norma and Bill Coli, who, along with hired help, manage the various aspects of the farm. Bill, who previously worked at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, now dedicates his time to the farm's equipment operation and maintenance.

The farm's location offers several unique features, such as vernal ponds, seclusion, quiet, and beautiful views in all directions. With miles of trails, Blue Heron Farm is an ideal destination for birding, biking, riding, hiking, snow-shoeing, or cross-country skiing. The farm's top-of-the-mountain, end-of-the-road location also provides a peaceful setting, far from sources of light pollution, making it perfect for stargazing.

A Slice of Life on This 130 Acre Organic Farm

Blue Heron Farm boasts a small herd of goats, a delicious crop of high-bush blueberries, a small herd of Norwegian Fjord horses, and an abundant supply of Certified Organic pure maple syrup. The public is welcome to enjoy a farm holiday year-round in any of the four cozy accommodations available: a log cabin surrounded by pastures, a private three-level cottage, a modern post-and-beam home with a two-car garage, and a fully renovated one-bedroom bungalow. All rentals are fully furnished and equipped, winterized, and secluded.

During a stay at Blue Heron Farm, the outside world seems to disappear as guests hike the numerous trails, help feed the goats and horses, pick blueberries, collect eggs for their use from the small but productive flock of Rhode Island Red laying hens, choose vegetables from the gardens, participate in or observe other seasonal farm activities, or simply gaze at the Milky Way overhead.

A Rich Variety of Wildlife and Plant Life

The farm is home to two certified vernal ponds, where nature lovers can see eggs and adults of yellow-spotted and blue-spotted salamanders, wood frogs, and other native species. Summer is ideal for watching and listening to numerous species of migratory and native songbirds. Deer, wild turkeys, fox, and other wildlife abound, making Blue Heron Farm an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts. In the fall, the numerous sugar maples burst into colors, painting the farm in vivid reds, yellows, and oranges.

Certified Organic Pure Maple Syrup

Blue Heron Farm produces an abundant supply of Certified Organic pure maple syrup. Between 600 and 800 gallons of syrup are boiled to perfection in their sugar house each season. Certified Organic Grade A syrup is available in sizes from pint to gallon through mail order.

Norwegian Fjord Horses

The farm maintains a small herd of Norwegian Fjord horses, a breed that originated in Norway. These horses are known for their versatility, good temperament, and hardiness. Blue Heron Farm breeds, trains, and sells these horses, and visitors can watch them school or even participate in their training.
