At El Nicho Folk Art Gift Shop, we are more than just a gift shop - we're a destination. For over 30 years, we've been one of Santa Fe's most beloved gift shops, specializing in hand-crafted Hispanic Colonial and Native American folk art. Our collection is curated with love, featuring folk art wood carvings from the legendary Ortega family, Southwestern jewelry at off-the-plaza prices, and highly collectible New Mexican and Native American crafts.

Our Story

El Nicho was founded in 1986 by Madeline Dunn, a Massachusetts native who relocated to Santa Fe to start a new life. Tired of the hectic pace of an ER nurse, Madeline envisioned creating a unique shop that carried all local works of art. That concept has continued throughout the years, with the shop becoming a place where many family members have worked together to create something truly special. Over the years, we've formed significant relationships with numerous local artists, the most enduring being the Ortega family of woodcarvers.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide a platform for local artists to showcase their talents, while also supporting their economic well-being. We buy directly from our artists, ensuring that all of our art is authentic and made available at excellent prices. This approach not only benefits the artists but also allows us to offer our customers unique and authentic pieces that can't be found anywhere else.

Our Collection

Our collection is a reflection of our passion for Hispanic Colonial and Native American folk art. From angels and santos to Chimayo crosses, Acoma pottery, and Native American fetishes, we have something for everyone. Our mixed media folk art section features the incredible dioramas of Tim Prythero, while our home decor section is filled with beautiful pillows and other treasures. And, of course, no visit to El Nicho would be complete without exploring our Southwestern jewelry collection, featuring pieces at off-the-plaza prices.
