Dedicated to protecting the rights and dignity of older Mainers

Our Mission

Since 1974, Legal Services for Maine Elders has been dedicated to safeguarding the rights of older Mainers. Our mission is to provide compassionate and effective legal assistance to individuals 60 years of age and older when their fundamental human needs are at risk. We strive to ensure that all seniors in Maine have access to legal support, regardless of their financial circumstances.

Serving Seniors through Our Helpline and Staff Attorneys

Our toll-free Helpline serves as a vital resource for older Mainers seeking legal guidance. Staff attorneys are available to provide personalized consultations, answer questions, and address a wide range of legal issues. We assist with matters such as elder abuse, guardianship, housing disputes, and Medicare benefit challenges. Our attorneys also handle correspondence with third parties, advocate on behalf of clients, and, when necessary, represent them in court or administrative proceedings.

Expanding Access to Legal Services through Our Network

Recognizing the diverse needs of the senior community, we have established a Reduced Fee Attorney Panel. This network of trusted legal professionals throughout Maine provides quality representation at a reduced or flat fee basis to individuals who may not be able to afford standard legal services. This program expands access to justice, ensuring that all seniors have the opportunity to seek legal assistance when needed.

Navigating the Complexities of Healthcare

Our Health Insurance Counseling Program offers invaluable support to older Mainers and individuals under 65 with Medicare. We understand the complexities of the healthcare system and work diligently to empower seniors to make informed decisions about their healthcare. Our Helpline counselors provide personalized assistance with Medicare enrollment, appeal processes, understanding healthcare benefits, and addressing questions about drug coverage.

Combating Medicare Fraud and Abuse

Through our partnership with the Office of Aging and Disability Services and Maine's Area Agencies on Aging, we proudly operate the Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP). The SMP is dedicated to educating Mainers with Medicare, their families, and caregivers about their rights and protections under Medicare. Our dedicated volunteers assist individuals in understanding their Medicare statements, identifying potential fraud and abuse, and filing complaints with Medicare. They also conduct informative presentations to community groups, raising awareness about Medicare-related issues.

Providing Dedicated Legal Support for Medicare Part D

Our Medicare Part D Appeals Unit focuses on assisting low-income Mainers with Medicare who require help accessing their essential prescription medications. This specialized unit provides comprehensive support, including navigating the appeals process, advocating for fair treatment, and ensuring that seniors receive the medications they need to maintain their health and well-being.
