About Us

Summer Camp Scholarships (SCS) was a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering Washtenaw County's most vulnerable 4th and 5th graders by providing them with the opportunity to attend overnight camp. From 2006 to 2022, we proudly served over 1,000 deserving children, fostering their development and helping them build essential life skills.

Our Mission

Our mission was to make the transformative experience of summer camp accessible to children who might otherwise not have the chance. We partnered with established camps to offer fully-funded scholarships, ensuring that cost would never be a barrier to attendance.

What We Did

SCS took a holistic approach to ensuring every child had a positive and enriching camp experience. We:

• Assisted families with essential gear: Sleeping bags, duffel bags, clothing, and other necessities were provided to ensure comfort and safety.
• Suppressed transportation barriers: We arranged carpools, collaborated with school social workers to deliver items, and even transported children directly to and from camp.
• Connected with diverse camps: Carefully selected camps were located within reasonable distance and prioritized inclusivity by promoting racially, ethnically, and economically diverse populations.
• Nurtured campers' potential: Experienced counselors guided children, promoting social-emotional development, independence, and self-confidence.
• Created lasting memories: Opportunities for outdoor adventure, from ziplining to swimming and hiking, enriched each camper's experience.

Our Legacy

Summer Camp Scholarships is no longer accepting new registrations or donations, but its mission lives on. We proudly passed the torch to Mentor2Youth, who is now carrying forward the tradition of providing underprivileged children with access to summer camp.
