Building a Sustainable Future, One Pavement at a Time

The Asphalt Pavement Alliance (APA) is a leading organization in the asphalt pavement industry, dedicated to promoting the use of high-quality asphalt pavements. We are committed to fostering sustainable and livable communities by advocating for the life-cycle cost advantages of asphalt as the most durable and perpetual pavement surface. Our mission is to raise awareness about the benefits of asphalt pavements and to provide resources for our members and the general public.

Why Asphalt?

Asphalt pavements offer numerous benefits over other pavement materials. They have a lower life-cycle cost, reduced traffic disruption during construction, and improved ride quality. Moreover, asphalt is a sustainable and perpetual pavement solution that can be designed for a 50-year life or more. With the ability to recycle and reuse asphalt materials, it is an environmentally responsible choice for pavement construction.

Pavement Facts

Did you know that there are over 4.05 million public centerline road miles (8.52 million lane miles) in the U.S., and nearly 94% of the paved roads in the U.S. are paved with asphalt? That's because asphalt is a reliable and durable choice for pavement construction. In Washington State, approximately 70% of roads are paved, with nearly 63% of them being paved with asphalt.

Life Cycle Cost

The life-cycle cost of asphalt pavements is lower than other pavement surfaces. Asphalt pavements require less maintenance, have a longer lifespan, and can be recycled and reused, which reduces the overall cost of the pavement. Our organization provides resources and guidance on the life-cycle cost analysis of asphalt pavements, helping our members and the public make informed decisions about their pavement choices.

Perpetual Pavement

Perpetual pavements are designed for a 50-year life or more, and asphalt is the most common material used for perpetual pavement construction. Our organization recognizes and promotes the use of perpetual pavements through our Perpetual Pavement Awards program. We celebrate and honor state transportation departments, local agencies, and private organizations that have designed and constructed long-life asphalt pavements.

Sustainable Pavement

Asphalt is a sustainable and eco-friendly pavement material. Our organization promotes the use of sustainable and green practices in asphalt pavement construction, such as the use of reclaimed asphalt pavement, warm-mix asphalt, and porous asphalt. We believe that using sustainable practices in asphalt pavement construction is essential for creating livable communities and protecting the environment.

Livable Communities

APA is committed to creating livable communities by promoting the use of asphalt pavements. We believe that high-quality and well-maintained roads are essential for economic growth and development, public safety, and the overall quality of life. We work with our members and the public to ensure that roads are designed, built, and maintained to the highest standards.

Membership

Joining APA is a great way to stay informed and connected to the asphalt pavement industry. Our members include state transportation departments, local agencies, private organizations, and individuals. Members have access to exclusive resources, events, and networking opportunities. We offer two types of membership: Regular Members and Associate Members. Regular Members are state transportation departments, local agencies, and other organizations that are primarily engaged in the design, construction, and maintenance of asphalt pavements. Associate Members are individuals, consulting firms, and other organizations that are not primarily engaged in the design, construction, and maintenance of asphalt pavements but have an interest in the industry.
