THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS HAVING TOO MANY BOOKS

The Homer Bookstore has a rich history that dates back to 1974 when Woody Suttles, a returned Peace Corps volunteer, opened Homer's first official bookstore. The bookstore began as a small enterprise, with two circular book racks inside the former Quiet Sports on Pioneer Avenue. Woody, along with partners Splinter and Kathy Smith, opened the store in a small building on Pioneer Avenue, east of Alice's Champagne Palace, formerly known as The Club Bar. Kathy and Splinter purchased Woody's share of the business after being in operation for two years and officially named the store - The Bookstore.

The Bookstore's location moved to a building on Pioneer Avenue just west of Bartlett Street, which was known as the Bay Art center. From there, the store moved to one of the small buildings on Pioneer Avenue across from the post office, which was previously a storage area for the cannery. In the early 1980s, the store relocated to its current location on Pioneer Avenue, which was once a restaurant and bar. The store has been serving the Homer community and visitors for over 45 years, providing a wide range of books that cater to a more intellectually demanding market than most.
